3 Tips to Protect Your HVAC System From Storms

Our experienced HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks has seen quite a few storms in our day. It is very important to know how to protect your HVAC unit from a big storm. Wall's HVAC Service is here to offer you 3 general tips to protect your HVAC unit from a storm and general recommendations on what to do before and after a storm.

3 General Tips to Protect Your HVAC Unit From a Storm

1. Install hail guards on your outside unit.

If there's a potential hail storm coming your way, we recommend installing hail guards on your outside unit to prevent hail damage from occurring.

2. Be sure all loose objects are put away.

A storm could come at any time. Whether you know it's coming or it is completely unexpected,  you should make sure all loose items are put away. For example, items such as:
  • bikes
  • toys
  • outdoor furniture
  • gardening tools
....should all be put away. A heavy wind gust could cause any one of these items to plunge into your HVAC unit causing very expensive damage.

3. Cover your outdoor unit.

To prevent anything from getting into and damaging your condenser unit, turn it off and put a tight cover over your outdoor system. Please note: if heavy rain is in the forecast, it can flood your outdoor system.

Before a Storm

There are many things you can do before a storm happens to better protect your air conditioner unit.

  • Call an HVAC technician at the Lake of the Ozarks and have a maintenance inspection done. Not only are maintenance check ups important, but especially before a storm. Having a routine inspection done will ensure that minor issues don't become major issues after a storm has passed.
  • Make sure your outside AC unit is installed on top a concrete slab and bolted to the concrete with straps.
  • Be sure your AC's electrical components are protected.
  • Cover your AC unit before the storm. You can cover your unit with a tarp or even a homemade plywood structure.
  • Last, but not least, be sure to turn your AC off!

After a Storm

  • Never turn your AC back on right after a storm.
  • Remove your AC cover.
  • Inspect the unit and surrounding area for damages. Make sure your AC unit is still in good working condition.

If you have any doubts as to whether your AC has successfully made it through the storm, contact a professional HVAC technician at the Lake of the Ozarks.
