How to Protect Your HVAC System from Snow & Ice

Did you know that winter officially starts December 21? This year has really flown by, hasn't it? That snow and ice will be here before you know it and you will want to protect your HVAC system. You rely on your HVAC system to keep you and your family warm throughout those colder months. Your HVAC system will need the proper care in order to do what it was built to do this winter, keep you warm. The best heating and cooling company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give you some pointers on how to protect your HVAC system from snow and ice this winter.

How to Protect Your HVAC System from Snow & Ice

1. Protect your foundation.

Keep your gutters clean and free of debris. Try to rake your leaves on a regular basis. Be sure to seal any cracks you may have in your foundation. Direct your downspouts away from your home. When the snow starts to melt on the top of your roof, the water can move away from your home.

2. Keep the area around your HVAC unit clean.

Keep the snow and leaves shoveled away from your HVAC unit. It's best to try and do this on a regular basis. Try developing a routine. This can help prevent costly issues from occurring in the future.

3. Gas furnace? Protect the intake pipes and exhaust.

If ice or melted snow are able to reach your pipes, it could lead to your pipes freezing and your furnace shutting down.

4. Don't enclose your condensers for your heat pumps!

A common misconception can be to cover your condenser to protect it from snow and ice, but don't do that. When installed, your condenser unit should be elevated many inches off the ground to help prevent snow and ice from building up.
