The Dangerous Effects of Carbon Monoxide

While we need our furnaces to heat our homes and make them more comfortable in these colder months, it's important that you understand what carbon monoxide is and what it can do if there is a leak from your furnace. Our HVAC company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to give you some need-to-know information regarding carbon monoxide.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

It's important to understand most furnaces are fuel burning, which can mean if there is a leak, carbon monoxide can enter you home and cause CO poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a gas that is toxic and can keep you from breathing the oxygen that you need.

If you have CO poisoning, symptoms can include:
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • headache
  • dizziness
If the CO level is high enough, you can even become unconscious or die. Exposure to moderate and high levels of CO over long periods of time has also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. People who survive severe CO poisoning may suffer from long term health issues.

Carbon Monoxide - Furnace Safety Fact Sheet

Every winter when the temperature drops, your furnace can become a silent killer. Gas and oil-burning furnaces produce carbon monoxide (CO). CO is an invisible, odorless, poison gas that kills hundreds every year and makes thousands more sick. Follow these steps to keep your family safe this winter.

CO DETECTORS

Install battery-operated or battery back-up CO detectors near every sleeping area in your home. Check CO detectors regularly to be sure they are functioning properly.
