Fun Facts About Furnaces

Fall is right around the corner and you will be using your furnace before you know it. Fall can one of the most beautiful seasons of the year at the Lake of the Ozarks because of all the incredible trees around here changing color. While Fall can be beautiful at the lake, it can also be a bit chilly. In this blog, your heating and cooling professionals at the Lake of the Ozarks would like to share some FUN facts about furnaces with you.

Fun Facts About Furnaces

1. Furnaces can get old.

Many people may not realize but it is not uncommon for furnaces to STILL work when they are 20, 30, or even 40 years old. Medium efficiency furnaces typically can last for up to 18 to 25 years. High-efficiency furnaces can last between 15 to 20 years. Most people tend to not think much about their furnaces because they are usually already installed in their houses when they move and continue to work for many years after.

2. Furnaces are the most common heating source.

The majority of homes throughout the U.S. are heated by furnaces. Furnaces warm houses through a system of ceiling, floor, and wall ducts. Furnaces may be heated with natural gas, oil, or electricity. Natural gas is the most popular and can be the most economical. Heat from natural gas, when compared to heat from electricity, can cost on average 30 percent less, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

3. Furnaces have a very long history.

The earliest known furnace was built in 1200 B.C. by the Romans. The furnaces back then were called hypocausts. In building construction, hypocausts are referring to the open space left in the floor. The building is heated by gases from a fire or furnace below.
